“Human beings are the product and embodiment of their own past. It is only by contact with this past, in thinking and in relationships, that we exist. The same is true for societies: their history is the main component of their present identity.” (Quoted in Why Scottish History Matters, edited by Rosalind Mitchison, 1997.)
The above quote could be simplified to: ‘without history, there would be nothing!’
Students at Dornoch Academy are taught that history is not simply about the past but that it reflects on the present and, on occasions, also relates to the future. Moreover, history is not merely a catalogue of events initiated by great men and women, but the story of human development at all levels. The person who is ignorant of his or her history, is ignorant of Life itself.
