Three pupils have contributed to a global experiment using results from experiments they have performed during their National 4 Chemistry course. Cheryl Cowie, Holly Hunter and Stevie Mackenzie used beads that change colour when exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light to evaluate materials and liquids that let UV pass through them. They performed various experiments, analysed the results and submitted their data online so their results can be compared with other schools around the world. This is a relevant study as a high exposure to UV light from the sun can increase the risk of skin cancer, so finding out which materials block UV can help make sun creams and clothing that can prevent the damaging effects of UV radiation. The pupils showed excellent practical and analytical skills and have also created an informative display in the science corridor.
